Product Name
Loctite 592 PST Slow Cure Thread Sealant
Brief Description
Loctite 592 PST Slow Cure Thread Sealant is a high-viscosity, medium-strength, anaerobic-curing thread sealant paste. It is specifically designed to prevent leaks on metal pipe threads and fittings. This sealant offers immediate low-pressure sealing and allows for the repositioning of fittings for up to 24 hours after application before achieving full cure. It also provides high-temperature resistance and lubricating properties to prevent galling during assembly.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Sealing metal pipe threads and fittings.- Preventing leakage from vibration, extreme pressure, and thermal cycling.- Sealing pressure fittings in hydraulic systems to prevent fluid leaks.- Sealing air or chemical lines on equipment during OEM assembly.- Routine repairs of compressors and fluid systems in facility maintenance.- Used as a vacuum equipment gasket maker and thread sealant.- Automotive applications, including sealing against motor oil, unleaded gasoline, phosphate ester, isopropanol, air, distilled water, automatic transmission fluid, and brake fluid.- Sealing head bolts that extend into water jackets during engine repair.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/ Building Services- Energy- General Manufacturing- Marine- Petroleum Industry, Products or Services- Pool/Spa/Plumbing- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Anaerobic curing: cures when confined in the absence of air between close-fitting metal threads.- High lubricity: prevents galling on pipe threads and fittings and facilitates easy assembly.- Provides immediate low-pressure sealing upon assembly.- Allows for readjustment of fittings for up to 24 hours after initial application.- Offers high-temperature resistance, suitable for applications up to 204 °C (400 °F).- Medium strength allows for disassembly with standard hand tools.- Resistant to a wide range of automotive fluids and industrial chemicals.
Key Properties
- Technology: Acrylic, Dimethacrylate ester.- Appearance (uncured): Thick opaque off-white paste.- Components: One-part, requiring no mixing.- Viscosity: High, ranging from 200,000 to 500,000 mPa·s (cP).- Cure Type: Anaerobic cure, slow cure, room temperature cure.- Strength: Medium.- Full Cure Time: Typically 24 to 72 hours, depending on substrate and temperature.- Operating Temperature Range: -65°F to 400°F (-54°C to 204°C).- Pressure Resistance: Seals to pipe burst pressure after full cure, up to 10,000 psi.- Specific Gravity: 1.21.- VOCs Content: 0.72%.- Odor: Mild.
Surface Compatibility
- Recommended for use with metal pipe threads and fittings.- Not recommended for use on plastic piping, particularly thermoplastic materials, due to potential stress cracking.- Users are advised to confirm compatibility with specific plastic substrates.- Not suitable for use in pure oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, chlorine, or other strong oxidizing materials.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant.- LK592 Pipe Thread Sealant (marketed as an equivalent to Loctite 592).- Other thread sealants from brands such as Loxeal, 3M, Permatex, and Threebond.- PTFE pipe thread sealant (also known as pipe dope).- Loctite 565, 567, and 577 (Teflon-based thread sealants).- Loctite 545 (specifically for hydraulic fittings).- Loctite 515 (a gel designed to fill larger gaps in fittings).
Comparison Note
Loctite 592 PST Slow Cure Thread Sealant is distinguished by its combination of medium strength, slow cure time, high-temperature resistance, and lubricating properties. Unlike many threadlockers that primarily prevent fastener loosening, Loctite 592 is formulated specifically for sealing metal pipe threads and fittings against leaks. Its ability to allow for repositioning of parts for an extended period sets it apart from faster-curing sealants, while its high-temperature rating exceeds that of many general-purpose pipe dopes.
