Loctite 518 is a red, medium-strength anaerobic flange sealant for close-fitting, rigid metal assemblies. It forms a gasket in place between mating surfaces and is suited to cast iron, steel and aluminum flanges, including low-copper aluminum.

Key benefits

  • One-part gel: no mixing or pre-cut gasket required.
  • Thixotropic consistency helps keep the bead in position.
  • Tolerates minor surface oil contamination; cleaning is still recommended.
  • Fluoresces under UV light to help check application.

When to use

For industrial maintenance and assembly of rigid flange joints, gearbox covers and engine casings. Designed for close-fitting metal faces with gaps up to 0.25 mm (0.01 in).

Technical specifications

  • Chemistry: dimethacrylate ester acrylic; anaerobic cure.
  • Color: red; specific gravity: 1.1 at 23°C.
  • Typical viscosity: 4,000,000 mPa·s at 25°C, Brookfield HBT, spindle TC, 0.5 rpm, Helipath.
  • Typical lap shear strength: 8.4 N/mm² on grit-blasted mild steel after 24 hours at 23°C (ISO 4587).
  • Catalog fixture time on steel: approximately 25 minutes.
  • Operating temperature: −55°C to +150°C.

Application and cure

Clean and degrease the mating faces. Apply a continuous bead, including around bolt holes, then assemble and tighten promptly. Cure depends on metal, joint gap and temperature. An appropriate Henkel activator can accelerate slow cure on passive surfaces or at low temperatures; follow the technical data sheet. Fixture time is not full cure or permission to return an assembly to service.

Sizes and shelf-life options

Choose one 6 mL tube (IDH 2096062), 50 mL tube (IDH 2096064) or 300 mL cartridge (IDH 2096061). Fresh Material is within the labeled shelf life; Short Shelf Life has 1–3 months left; Recently Expired is beyond the labeled expiry date. Confirm the actual lot date before use. Published performance data does not establish expired-stock performance; evaluate suitability for the application.

Storage and limitations

Store unopened in a dry location, ideally at 8–21°C. Not recommended for pure oxygen, oxygen-rich systems or strong oxidizers. Avoid use on plastics without compatibility testing. For industrial use only; Henkel states this product is not intended for consumer sale or use. Follow the SDS for ventilation, protective gloves and eye protection.
