LOCTITE® 272 is a one-component, red, high-strength anaerobic threadlocker for permanently locking and sealing close-fitting metal fasteners. It cures after assembly when air is excluded between metal surfaces, helping prevent loosening and leakage caused by shock and vibration. Its high-temperature capability makes it well suited to large bolts and studs, with M25 (1 in.) and larger fasteners listed as typical applications.

Key benefits

  • High-strength, permanent-grade threadlocking for demanding assemblies
  • Service temperature after full cure: -65°F to 450°F (-54°C to 232°C)
  • Helps resist loosening and leakage from shock and vibration
  • Seals threaded joints and supports through-hole applications
  • Medium-viscosity, thixotropic formula for controlled application
  • One-component product; no mixing required

Technical values are typical manufacturer data and can vary with substrate, gap, temperature, activator use, and cure conditions.

Popular applications

  • Permanent locking and sealing of large metal bolts and studs
  • High-temperature threaded assemblies
  • Fasteners exposed to shock, vibration, or leak paths
  • Through-hole and blind-hole threaded assemblies
  • Automotive powertrain and chassis, electric-motor, heavy-equipment, and industrial maintenance work

Directions for use

  1. Clean: Remove oil and contamination from internal and external threads with a suitable LOCTITE® cleaner, then allow the parts to dry.
  2. Activate when needed: On inactive metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, or plated surfaces—or when cure is slow at temperatures below 5°C (41°F)—apply LOCTITE® SF 7471 or SF 7649 and let it dry.
  3. Protect the nozzle: Do not let the dispensing tip touch metal; contact can cure product in the nozzle.
  4. Through holes: Place several drops on the bolt where the nut will engage.
  5. Blind holes: Apply several drops down the internal threads toward the bottom of the hole and add several drops to the bolt.
  6. Thread sealing: Apply a continuous 360° bead to the leading male threads while leaving the first thread free. Work material into larger threads or gaps; coat female threads as needed.
  7. Assemble: Join and tighten the parts to the specified torque before the adhesive fixtures.

Disassembly: Try standard hand tools first. If the assembly cannot be removed, heat the nut or bolt locally to about 250°C (482°F) and disassemble while hot.

Cleanup: Cured material can be softened with a LOCTITE® solvent such as LOCTITE® 7200, then removed with a soft scraper. Avoid generating dust or aerosols. Finish with a suitable LOCTITE® cleaner such as 7063.

Storage

Keep the unopened container closed and dry in a cool, well-ventilated location. Henkel lists 8°C to 21°C (46°F to 70°F) as the optimal range; storage below 8°C or above 28°C (82°F) can affect product properties. The U.S. SDS specifies safe storage at or below 38°C (100.4°F), away from heat, sparks, and open flame. Keep locked up. Do not return dispensed material to the original container because contamination can reduce product performance.

Safety and use limitations

WARNING: Causes skin irritation. May cause an allergic skin reaction. Causes serious eye irritation. Suspected of causing cancer. May cause organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure.

  • Read and understand all safety precautions before use. Avoid breathing vapor, mist, or spray.
  • Use with adequate ventilation. Wear protective gloves and clothing plus eye and face protection. Wash thoroughly after handling.
  • Not recommended for pure-oxygen or oxygen-rich systems, or as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidizers.
  • Not normally recommended for plastics, particularly thermoplastics that can stress-crack. Confirm compatibility before use.
  • The current U.S. SDS identifies the formulation as UN 3082, Class 9, Packing Group III for ground, air, and water transport; actual shipment requirements can depend on package and shipment conditions.
