Product Name
DEVCON FL-10 15980 Flexane Primer – 4 oz
Brief Description
A one-part, moisture-cure adhesion promoter primer specifically formulated to maximize the bond of Devcon Flexane urethanes to metal surfaces. It is also a crucial component in multi-primer systems for metal substrates exposed to water immersion.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Priming all metal substrates, including stainless steel and aluminum, before applying any Devcon Flexane products.- Used as a primer after shotblasting and before coating with any Devcon metal-filled epoxy.- Essential for metal surfaces requiring maximum tear resistance or those exposed to moisture or submerged in water, in conjunction with Devcon FL-20 Primer.- Prevents oxidation and flash rusting on metal surfaces when applied immediately after cleaning and surface preparation.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/ Building Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Marine- Metal Fabrication- Petroleum Industry, Products or Services- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- One-part, moisture-cure formulation for ease of application.- Rapid drying time, typically 5-30 minutes, though humidity can extend this.- Specifically engineered to provide ultimate adhesion for all Devcon Flexane urethanes to metals.- Acts as an excellent primer after shotblasting, preparing surfaces for subsequent coatings.- Helps prevent oxidation and flash rusting on metal surfaces.
Key Properties
- Type: Primer- Physical Form: Liquid- Color: Blue- Odor: Solvent- Container Capacity: 4 oz (112g)- Cure Time: 5 to 30 minutes (tack-free)- Adhesion (dry metal, 2 coats): 50-75 pli- Adhesion (dry metal, 1 coat): 25-50 pli- Percent Solids by Volume: 15%- Specific Gravity: 0.87- VOCs Content: 640g/L- Flash Point: 55°F- Chemical Composition: Phenolic Resin, Isopropanol, Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, Toluene, Ethanol.
Surface Compatibility
- Metals (including stainless steel and aluminum)- For immersion applications or maximum tear resistance on metal, it is used in conjunction with FL-20 Primer.- When used as part of a system with FL-20, compatibility extends to rubber, concrete, wood, fiberglass, rigid plastics, and previously applied Flexane.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Devcon FL-20 Flexane Primer (15985): This is a complementary primer, not a direct substitute for FL-10 on all metal applications. FL-20 is specifically recommended for rubber, concrete, wood, fiberglass, rigid plastics, and cured urethanes. It is used *with* FL-10 for metal surfaces in wet or immersion environments.
Comparison Note
Devcon FL-10 Flexane Primer is specifically formulated for optimal adhesion of Flexane urethanes to metal surfaces, offering superior bond strength and corrosion prevention on metals. In contrast, Devcon FL-20 Flexane Primer is designed for a broader range of non-metallic substrates like rubber, concrete, wood, and fiberglass. For critical metal applications involving water immersion or high tear resistance, both FL-10 and FL-20 are used in a layered priming system to achieve maximum adhesion.
