Chem-Set CA500 is a clear, medium-viscosity cyanoacrylate super glue for fast, close-fitting bonds. Its 100 cP ethyl-based formula joins a wide range of similar and dissimilar materials, including selected plastics, rubber and metals. With handling strength in approximately 10 seconds in most applications, it is a practical choice for small-part assembly and industrial repairs where quick positioning and a discreet bond line matter.
Key Benefits
- Rapid handling: Documented fixture times range from under 5 seconds on neoprene and PVC to under 30 seconds on polycarbonate.
- Versatile material bonding: The TDS lists ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, nylon, steel, aluminum, neoprene, nitrile, wood, porcelain and other substrates. Test the actual material and joint before use.
- Strong bonds: Documented steel lap-shear strength exceeds 2,100 psi (14.5 MPa).
- Clear, one-part formula: Apply directly from the bottle without mixing components.
- Suited to close-fitting joints: A thin bond line promotes faster cure; choose a higher-viscosity product for poorly fitting parts.
Product Specifications
| Product | Chem-Set CA500 |
|---|---|
| Chemistry / components | Ethyl cyanoacrylate; one-part instant adhesive |
| Color / form | Clear liquid (TDS) |
| Viscosity | 100 cP (100 mPa·s); medium viscosity |
| Gap fill | For close-fitting surfaces. Maximum gap is not specified; larger gaps slow cure. Use a higher-viscosity adhesive when parts do not mate flush. |
| Handling strength | Approximately 10 seconds in most applications; material-dependent |
| Fixture time by substrate | Steel <20 s; aluminum <15 s; neoprene <5 s; ABS <10 s; PVC <5 s; polycarbonate <30 s; phenolic <10 s. TDS testing at 50% relative humidity. |
| Full cure | Not specified in the supplied CA500 documents. Fixture time is not full cure. |
| Lap-shear bond strength (ISO 4587) | Steel >2,100 psi (14.5 MPa); aluminum >1,750 psi (12.1 MPa); neoprene >750 psi (5.2 MPa); ABS, PVC and polycarbonate >900 psi (6.2 MPa); phenolic >850 psi (5.9 MPa). |
| Steel tensile strength (ISO 6922) | >1,800 psi (12.4 MPa) |
| Hardness | Not specified in the supplied CA500 documents |
| Specific gravity / approximate density | TDS: 1.05 (approximately 1.05 g/mL). SDS: 1.07 at 25°C (77°F), approximately 1.07 g/mL. Documents differ; values are not a guaranteed range. |
| Dielectric constant / dissipation factor | At 1 kHz: dielectric constant 2–3.50; dissipation factor <0.02 (ASTM D150) |
| Available sizes | 1oz Bottle; 2oz Bottle; 1lb Bottle |
| Storage | SDS ideal: 41–50°F (5–10°C). TDS: unopened, dry, out of sunlight, at or below 72°F (22°C); refrigeration may extend unopened storage life. |
| Shelf life | TDS states two years with proper storage; SDS states one year from shipment. Follow the bottle's lot/expiration information; no fixed remaining shelf life is promised. |
Performance figures come from the CA500 TDS and are not guaranteed specifications. Bond strength and cure speed depend on substrate, surface preparation, gap and humidity. Published performance must not be assumed for expired stock.
Directions for Use
- Check that the parts fit closely. Clean and dry bonding surfaces, removing oil, grease and contamination with a substrate-compatible cleaner.
- Apply a small amount of adhesive to one surface and assemble promptly, spreading it into a thin bond line.
- Align and hold the parts undisturbed until handling strength develops. Use the substrate-specific fixture times as guidance, not a full-cure schedule.
- Allow the bond to develop adequate strength before loading. The supplied documents do not state a full-cure time; confirm the required cure period for your application.
- If needed, the TDS recommends Remove Debonder for excess adhesive. Confirm compatibility with the surface before applying any debonder.
Storage and Handling
Store in the original tightly closed container, dry and protected from sunlight, heat and ignition sources. The SDS recommends 41–50°F (5–10°C); the TDS permits unopened storage at or below 72°F (22°C). Keep moisture and contamination out of the bottle. Use adequate ventilation, eye protection and nitrile gloves. Do not use cotton, nylon or PVC gloves. Cyanoacrylate bonds skin and eyes in seconds and may irritate skin, eyes and the respiratory system. Keep out of reach of children and read the SDS before use. Intended for industrial use.
Production and small-part assembly: Bond close-fitting plastic, rubber and metal components when rapid handling helps keep an assembly process moving. CA500 develops handling strength in approximately 10 seconds in most applications; actual fixture times depend on the material.
Plastic component repair: Use on suitable ABS, PVC or polycarbonate housings, trim and molded parts with closely mating surfaces. The TDS reports fixture times below 10 seconds on ABS, 5 seconds on PVC and 30 seconds on polycarbonate. Test the specific plastic and finish.
Rubber component attachment: A candidate for attaching neoprene or nitrile pads, bumpers and small elastomer parts in equipment assembly and maintenance. Neoprene has a documented fixture time below 5 seconds; the TDS also lists EPDM, natural rubber and SBR as bondable materials.
Metal and mixed-material assembly: Join small steel or aluminum parts to compatible substrates in fabrication and industrial repair. Documented lap-shear strength exceeds 2,100 psi on steel and 1,750 psi on aluminum. Clean the joint and validate mixed-material combinations.
Wood, leather and porcelain details: The TDS lists wood, leather and porcelain as bondable substrates, supporting evaluation for close-fitting detail attachment and small repairs in woodworking, leather goods and ceramic work. Porosity and surface treatments can affect results.
Application limits: These application examples are based on the CA500 TDS's listed materials and performance. Verify adhesion and cure on actual parts. Use a higher-viscosity adhesive if parts do not mate flush. Do not assume published performance for recently expired stock.
