3M Scotch-Weld DP420 NS is a black, two-part toughened structural epoxy adhesive engineered for high-strength bonding applications requiring durability, impact resistance, and controlled non-sag application. Designed to replace mechanical fasteners such as screws, rivets, and spot welds, 3M DP420 NS delivers strong structural bonds across a wide range of substrates.
This 3M DP420 NS epoxy features a thick, non-sag, no-drip gel consistency that remains in place on vertical and overhead surfaces, allowing for more controlled adhesive placement during assembly and fabrication. The toughened epoxy formulation provides excellent resistance to vibration, fatigue, impact, and thermal cycling, making it well-suited for demanding industrial bonding environments.
With a 20-minute work life, 3M DP420 non-sag provides sufficient time for positioning and adjustment while still achieving handling strength in approximately two hours and full cure within 24 hours at 72°F (22°C). The adhesive maintains bond strength across high and low temperatures and can withstand paint bake operations up to 400°F (204°C) for limited exposure periods.

Comparison Note
- Toughened epoxies like DP420 NS offer enhanced toughness and impact resistance compared to standard epoxies, making them suitable for applications with vibration, impact, or dynamic loads.- They provide improved flexibility and ductility, allowing them to absorb energy and distribute stress more effectively, reducing bond failure in applications subject to movement or temperature swings.- Unlike conventional epoxies which can be too rigid and prone to cracking under cyclic loads or temperature extremes, toughened epoxies maintain high strength while offering greater resistance to fatigue and thermal shock.
